10 Tips for the Best Website Design or Redesign

The best websites are those sites that serve their purpose.  Some web sites serve as the backbone of a business’s retail operation, other websites serve as an adjunct source of sales revenue, while some sites are solely for building, and maintaining brand identity of product and services.

Whether you are about to begin a new website design project, or site redesign an existing site, it’s a good idea to take a critical look at other websites in your business or industry to get an idea a feel for what will work best for you.

Look at your top competitors sites to see size up what they are doing.  Conduct your own search, using target, relevant keywords and look at the design of the websites ranking high in search results.  What are they doing?

Pay attention and take note of the following for each site:

Do you like the layout?
Is there a logical sequence to the information?
Is the navigation easy to follow or do you find yourself clicking repeatedly to find what you are looking for?
Is the information on the site current?
Are products/services in good visual placement?
Is purchasing process / checkout simple and quick?

After reviewing a few websites with a critical eye, you probably realize the best site designs are user-friendly, visually engaging, and informative, require minimal clicking, and are up-to-date with current information.

1. Less is often more.  Avoid clutter, by keeping information to the point
2. Create your content page titles with good descriptive keywords making it easy for potential customers and search engines to find your site
3. Simplify your navigation
4. Make your home page easy to return to.
5. Clearly outline the purpose of the website on your home page
6. Provide customer service, phone numbers, and contact information in an easy to find location
7. Be sure your text and background colors have a good contrast
8. Spell check and click check your content and links for errors
9. Remove outdated information and keep your copyright up to date

And, number 10. Make it simple for visitors to do what it is you want them to do.  Provide clear direction (call to action) on every page.  For example, if you want them to download your whitepaper, sign up to receive your newsletter, purchase your products and/or services, make your phone ring, or tell everyone about the best website ever (your's) make it easy by instructing them where to go next, and then give them a link to it.
