This seems obvious, but sometimes we forget these fundamentals, and instead of giving visitors what they want we give them what we want.
Aside from giving visitors what they came in search of, a successful website is one that gets to the point or rather allows visitors to get to the point of their visit easily.

When building a website, the key is to focus on the point of the site a.k.a. the primary function of the web site. Once you define the primary function for having the website, you then build thoughtfully build your web site around delivering this purpose to your visitors.
Define the Website Purpose
In order to build a successful website you must define “successful” in terms of your goals. What does successful mean to you? Does successful mean increasing sales, obtaining contact information for leads, decreasing customer service calls etc? Simply, what is your website suppose to do.
For example, if your goal is selling actual products your focus is online sales. The primary focus of your website is selling. Create an online store that visitors can easily find the product they are shopping for, make the purchasing process as simple and straightforward as possible.
Marketing - if the purpose of your site is to promote offline services, you want to focus on delivering useful, practical information about how your service fulfills needs, provides benefit or a solution to your visitors, and then uses effective call to actions to direct visitors to contact you for your services.
In life, we measure success in terms of achievement, and building a successful website is no different. It all comes down to focusing on the purpose of your website, and then as simply and straightforward as possible give your visitors exactly what they want.
